Whether you’re heading to a party, a performance, or just want to spread a little joy, creating your own clown character is a fun and expressive adventure. Here’s a set of go-to makeup products to bring your cheerful alter ego to life.
Basic Clown Character Makeup
There’s an incredible number of ways to design a clown so we’ll focus on core design elements and techniques that you can use to make your own.
The key products will be Creme Makeup colors and Setting Powder.
Preparation: As with every makeup, you’ll want to begin by cleaning your face and neck with soap and water, or Hydra Cleanse, before applying product.
To start with the Clown Character we’ll recommend that you outline the design with a EP-0 White Eyebrow Pencil and fill in areas with colors as desired. Personalizing your own character is half the fun! An outline helps you visualize your character and ensures that the size and spacing of design elements are good before you put on lots of makeup.
Clown White is the classic choice for your base color because of its dense pigmentation for maximum coverage on the skin. It is quite a bit thicker than standard creme makeup. To make it easier to apply and blend with, you can warm the creme makeup up by working it into the back of a clean hand, or heat it up on a mixing palette with a blow dryer until the creme softens.
Another option is our Clown White Lite which offers a smoother and lighter quality than classic Clown White.
Apply your white makeup to the face and neck with a makeup sponge or spatula. For smaller areas and around curves apply with a small flat brush. You can then spread the base around your face with a sponge, brush, or your fingers. Pat and stipple the creme down with a sponge to even out the texture.
Tip: Use a clean instrument, like a Stainless Steel Spatula, to scoop out creme colors from their containers to maximize the makeup’s longevity.
Creme makeup, like Clown White, needs to be set with powder.
Sprinkle Neutral Set Powder on a powder puff and rub together to evenly disperse the powder. Gently press the puff onto the skin to set the creme makeup. Remove the excess powder with a clean puff or a fluffy brush. For a brighter white finish, set with our Super White Powder.
Nearly all basic clown designs will start with this white base.
We’ll now lay out steps to add color based on a classic clown character. This clown incorporates our WK-11 Primary Creme Wheel that’s found in our DK-1 Deluxe Clown Kit.
CL-13 Fire Red: With a flat brush, apply the Red Creme Color to the bottom lip only, extending the corners out to the cheek area, if desired. Apply Red Creme Color to the cheeks and nose. Or leave out the nose area for a Foam Clown Nose.
To intensify the Red Creme Color, you can apply CF-4 Fire Red MagiCake Aqua Paint directly over the powdered Red areas.
CL-19 Blue: Apply Blue with a brush to the upper eyelid area. For a softer shade, apply over White. For a brighter color, remove White from the design area and apply Blue directly to the skin. Carefully set makeup with Neutral Set Powder.
CL-5 Yellow: If desired, add Yellow next to Blue at the brow area for an extra playful appearance.
EP-9 Black Eyebrow Pencil: Apply a Black outline around the Red areas. Apply “eyelash” lines, eyeliner, eyebrows, and detail as shown. Set completed makeup with our Neutral Set Powder. You can dab a moistened sponge over powdered makeup to slightly brighten colors and remove any excess powder.
Finish the look with Mascara, Dry Rouge, costume, and a wig or clown hat!
Glam Clown
To give your Clown more shimmer and sparkle you can apply additional colors including our MagiColor Pencils, MagiCake Aqua Paints, Sparklers Glitter and our Lumiere Cremes and Powders. Lumière Cremes can also be set with our Translucent Powder to retain their shimmer!
